What Is a Functional Medicine Consultation?
A functional medicine consultation is a long-form clinical visit designed to answer a question short appointments rarely have room for: why are you feeling the way you are, and where does that pattern start? The conventional system is built for volume — short visits, one chief complaint at a time. That model works for emergencies and acute illness, but leaves little room to investigate slow-moving issues like fatigue, brain fog, persistent inflammation, or chronic discomfort that bloodwork keeps calling "normal."
Functional medicine works differently. Dr. Eng looks at how your systems interact — digestion, hormones, sleep, inflammation, mitochondrial energy, nutrient status, stress load — and traces the trail upstream from your symptoms to their drivers. The goal is not to suppress what you are feeling; it is to address the underlying causes directly.
A Different Kind of First Visit
What you take home from a Wellness Alternatives consultation is different from what most patients are used to.
- Time — a full appointment block dedicated to your story
- Real investigation — a deep history, focused labs, and time to make sense of them
- A personalized plan — built around your goals, your data, and your day-to-day life
- Direct access — every visit is with Dr. Eng, not a rotating team
- Integration — your plan can include any of the clinic's other therapies
- Continuity — follow-up visits refine what's working and drop what isn't
What to Expect at Your First Doctor Visit
Most first visits are scheduled as a 60- to 90-minute block. Before you come in, you'll complete a detailed intake — symptoms in plain language, medications and supplements, diet, sleep, stress, goals, and the patterns you have noticed that no one has had time to investigate.
In the room, the visit is a conversation. Dr. Eng goes through your intake with you, asks questions a short appointment never has room for, and connects things you may not have realized were related. Bring prior labs or records if you have them — otherwise, she'll tell you which tests will be most useful and why.
You will leave with a written plan specific to you: what to start, stop, test, track, and when to come back. Some plans focus first on diet, sleep, and movement; some add nutrient or hormone support; some integrate other in-clinic therapies. The plan is yours to act on at home.
Follow-up visits refine the plan rather than repeat it. As your body responds, the protocol evolves with you.

Questions About the Consultation
Most new-patient consultations are 60–90 minutes, depending on the complexity of your history. Follow-up visits are shorter. The time you have with Dr. Eng is unrushed.
Most insurance plans do not currently reimburse functional medicine visits at Wellness Alternatives. Call the office at 517-719-0730 for current self-pay rates. Many patients weigh the cost against the time short conventional visits cannot provide.
A complete medication and supplement list, copies of any recent labs or imaging, and any records from other physicians. Better too much information than too little.
Adults dealing with fatigue, persistent inflammation, hormone shifts, digestive issues, or chronic discomfort that conventional care has not resolved — plus anyone focused on prevention, performance, or healthy aging. If you've been told your labs are normal but you don't feel well, this is built for you.
Not without discussion. Dr. Eng is a medical doctor and coordinates with your prescribing physicians. Any change is a clinical decision she makes with you.
It depends on what is driving the issue. Some patients feel different within weeks; others — particularly with longer-standing patterns — see meaningful change over months as the underlying drivers shift.
