What Is GAINSWave Shockwave Therapy?
Shockwave therapy uses pulses of high-energy sound to stimulate the body's own repair mechanisms in injured or chronically irritated tissue. The acoustic energy reaches deep into the area being treated and signals the cells there to begin remodeling — laying down new collagen, recruiting blood flow, and clearing out the metabolic byproducts that keep an injury from healing on its own.
GAINSWave is sometimes called next-generation shockwave because it pairs the acoustic pulse with a precisely timed electric energy pulse delivered through the same handpiece. The acoustic component carries the work down into the tissue; the electric component supports the conduction and timing of cellular signaling at the surface. This combination — sometimes described as acoustic-electric or acoustic wave therapy — is what distinguishes GAINSWave from the older single-modality shockwave systems most clinics use.
Why Patients Come to Us for Shockwave
Shockwave is most often used for stubborn tendon, joint, and soft-tissue complaints that have not responded to rest, physical therapy, or injections. For patients pointing at a specific knee, shoulder, hip, or elbow, the joint pain condition page covers how GAINSWave fits inside a joint-specific plan.

What to Expect at a Session
Your first visit begins with a focused evaluation. Dr. Eng will review your history, the location and pattern of your discomfort, and any imaging or labs that are relevant. From there, she'll explain whether GAINSWave is a good fit for what you're dealing with, and if it is, you'll move into the treatment room.
The treatment itself is straightforward. A small amount of gel is applied to the area being worked on, and the GAINSWave handpiece is pressed against the skin. You'll feel a rapid tapping sensation along with a mild electric impulse — many people describe it as deep and unusual, more pressure than sharpness. There is no anesthesia, no incision, and no downtime.
Dr. Eng will set the cadence and length of your course based on what she observes and how your tissue responds — and adjust as you progress.

Questions About GAINSWave
Most people would not call it painful. The handpiece delivers a rapid tapping sensation combined with a mild electric impulse — deep and unusual, but not sharp. The intensity is adjusted to what is comfortable for you and the area being worked on.
It depends on what is being treated and how your tissue responds. Dr. Eng will discuss a recommended course at your first visit and adjust the plan as you progress through it.
It is most commonly used for chronic tendon and joint complaints — plantar fasciitis, tennis and golfer's elbow, shoulder discomfort, knee pain, and other stubborn soft-tissue issues that have not improved with rest, physical therapy, or injections. Dr. Eng will evaluate whether it is appropriate for your specific situation.
No. GAINSWave is non-invasive — no incisions, no anesthesia. You can drive yourself home and return to normal activity the same day.
Most insurance plans do not currently reimburse GAINSWave shockwave therapy. Call the office at 517-719-0730 for current self-pay rates. Many patients weigh the shockwave therapy cost against repeated injections or long-term medication.
Traditional shockwave uses acoustic energy alone. GAINSWave pairs an acoustic pulse with an electric energy pulse in the same handpiece — sometimes called acoustic-electric or acoustic wave therapy. Wellness Alternatives runs Mid-Michigan's first GAINSWave system, so patients in Lansing, MI can access it locally.
